Comets CCD, 2004

The following imagesare of Comet NEAT (C/2001 Q4). They were taken using my Orion 8" scope at f/4 with my MX916 at 2x2 binning unless otherwise stated. Clicking on some images will show a larger version.

This is an image of Comet NEAT Q4 taken on 2004-05-15. The image is an average of 5 images, each 60 seconds long, centered on the comet. The comet is moving against the back ground so the stars trail, but the comet does not.

This is the same image as above but processed in a different way. The head is smaller, but more of the noise is visible.

This is from the above image using a 'LarsonSekanina' rotation filter. It helps to show the rotational gradients in an image. With comet images it shows the jets from the head of the comet.

This image was taken with the camera set to full resolution. It is an average of 4, 120 second exposures.

This image is a mosaic of two parts. It shows the length of the tail. I had to align the images on the stars so there is a little movement in the comet. I think the gap is a disconnection event in the tail.
